Flywheel Sports: Fly, Never Coast
Let me tell you why fitness has been hard for me. I am so bad at keeping myself accountable!!!!! One thing I get so frustrated with myself for, is how easily I will cancel or ditch what I want, to instead fulfill what someone else is asking me to do. Working out is one of those things that I always plan to do, but then the slightest inconvenience or other option comes up and then suddenly I’ve traded sneakers for slippers and my booty is on a couch somewhere.
I have learned that I am not currently strong willed enough to stay committed to my own plans unless there is something at stake, like my money. It sounds silly but simply buying some group fitness classes and knowing I only have a certain time period to use them, makes me commit. Plus, the accountability in group fitness classes is WAY more than I ever have going to Planet Fitness. During group classes, you’re surrounded by men and women pushing themselves and we all end up pushing each other as a team to the end.
For the past few months, I have been trying out various classes and instructors at Flywheel Sports in Cameron Village and I have been loving my experience. There hasn’t been a single class that I did not enjoy. And I mean actual enjoyment. Not that “ugh can this be over already??” feeling that I get when I go to a large gym alone and I can’t think of what moves to do so I just give up and go home.
From the music pumping to the encouraging words from instructors, it really is 45 minutes that will leave you feeling refreshed and super strong. After the spin classes especially, I always feel like I’m on top of the world and I am unstoppable. That feeling usually lasts about 30 minutes until my body realizes how early I woke it up to workout and then my eyes start to burn like it’s time for a nap, so enjoy the feeling while it lasts.
Flywheel is conveniently located right on Oberlin Rd in Cameron Village. There is parking in the back and tons of great amenities in the studio. From those amazing Lifesaver mints to hair ties in case you forgot yours, Flywheel has all your workout necessities. As far as classes go, they have their indoor cycling stadium and then there is a room upstairs where precision training classes like barre, are held. One thing I find that a lot of people don’t realize, is that Flywheel offers much more than just spin classes.
Flywheel has two precision training class options: Flybarre and Flyfit. Flybarre is for if you don’t want to sweat a ton, but want to get those arms and ab muscles firing through the most precise small, yet mighty movements. Flyfit is a great total body workout that will have you jumping, lifting, and heart pumping. (PRO TIP: definitely don’t leave your water bottle at home if you’re taking this one!!!).
I have not had a single class I didn’t like, but some of my favorite instructors that really stand out for me are Amy Paulin (bike and barre) and Ashley (bike). I just notice that these ladies have pushed me the hardest!! And they always both have amazing playlists, which is pretty important for my workout.
Let’s talk what Flywheel is know for: cycling. When it comes to their cycling class options there are 3 types: Method, Power, and Tempo. Method is the Flywheel signature class. This high intensity, interval training ride will have you climbing hills and sprinting, with some recovery time in between. I also love how this class includes time for upper body work, where you grab a weighted bar and get some arm and shoulder exercises in. Power, is a more intense version of Method. You’ll be racing longer with less recovery time, definitely for all of you who like a good challenge ;) Lastly, there is Tempo (one of my personal faves). This class fuses rhythm riding with core-strengthening athletic movements for the ultimate beat-based, results-driven experience. It is fun and challenging and I LOVE the emphasis on rhythm and the music.
Now is THE perfect time to try out Flywheel because they recently installed ALL new bikes!! These create such a smooth ride that you’re going to love! They’ve also got an amazing retail section and they are currently having a sale so you should probably get there before these Beach Riot leggings are all gone!
If you’ve never tried Fly before, they are extremely kind and helpful when it comes to getting you set up and going your first time or two (or as much as you need). AND, your first class is FREE! There is literally no excuse not to try it!! I recommend booking a Method 45 and Flybarre class to get started and get a little taste of both! Click here to book your first class free!
Cheers to flying, never coasting.
